Whales singing in Vava’u Tonga, heard while diving

While doing some dives in Tonga with Dive Vava’u I could clearly hear whales sining. I was told they will not get close as they do not like the sound of exhaust bubbles.

I am free – Galapagos Diving 2008

Watch me go down on http://coolbluefilms.com

Inspirational footage from coolbluefilms.com filmed while on a Whale Shark Expedition with Scuba Safaris during August 2008 on board the Aggressor fleet. Seeing this it is difficult to beleive that this area – although a protected national park, does not maintain fully protected fishing and finning restrictions.
The cast (in rough order of appearance), are Dolphins, Sea Lion, Galapagos Shark, Scalloped Hammerhead, Spotted Eagle Ray, Turtle, Sting Ray, Whale Shark, Silky Shark, Moray Eel, Sea Horse,Guineafowl Puffer, Black Striped Salema and a huge shoal of Jack. Many of these species are indemic to the Galapagos islands.
You can just spot the very welcome special visit from a Tiger Shark rarely seen in this location and “Captain America” Jim Roberts bids farewell at the end.
The music used is by Morgan King and is the La Sarrena full length mix of I am Free from 1993. Enjoy…..we certainly did making it!

Jonathan Bird’s Blue World #3: Sperm Whales

The Sperm whale holds many records. It is the deepest-diving whale on Earth, the largest toothed whale on Earth and has the largest brain on the planet too. On top of that, it has a reputation for being a vicious beast, thanks in part to Herman Melville’s Moby Dick. But the Sperm whale is a lot different than people think. It has a highly-evolved social life, operates at depths where nobody can see them most of the time, and uses sonar which is so sophisticated that it makes the Navy’s electronics look like toys. Sperm whales are very hard to find and even harder to shoot, but Jonathan knows where to go to film the intimate social relationships of these giants.

Diving Whale Shark 2-1-09

Swimming with the Sharks

There had been reports of 3 whale sharks just south of Kona Paradise. Jay at Scuba Shack was going out Super Bowl Sunday and was heading South. We thought we should go out there and take a look, theres plenty of time before the game starts.

We met up at Scuba Shack and loaded up all the gear. Then down to harbor to load up the boat and head out. Full speed ahead, we headed South. Along the way we had to stop a few times to watch the humpback whales. There were quite a few of them, a small group in one area and a mom and a calf in another.

We got down to area at about 11 oclock. Since nobody was extremely familiar with the area we decided to send in a scout to check it out. That scout was me. Jumped in to check out where the best diving would be. While getting on the boat after the re-con I realized one of my fins was gone. So that made the decision where we were going to dive. So my first dive of the day was search and rescue. Luckily there were extra fins on the boat because we never found mine.

Back up at the top we had lunch while heading North to another dive spot. Henrys is a place known to have have sharks. Into the the water we went. Right below the boat was a huge cavern. We headed in and in there resting on the sandy bottom and swimming around the cave were 5 white tip reef sharks. Cute little guys. We spent quite a while in there watching them. After that we when to see what else we could find. I dont know how but Angle spotted a small scorpion fish, which was hard to see even after she pointed it out, their camouflage is so good. Now, some of us and not me, were out of air so reluctantly we headed back to the surface.

It was already now 2 oclock so the game was already well under way. We were all feeling great after 2 amazing dives but also a little disappointed we didnt get a chance to see some whale sharks. I was a little more disappointed about loosing one of my fins. Seeing whale sharks was a life long dream of mine. So full speed ahead again, North back to the big city.

As we approached Keahou bay we saw the Body Glove catamaran just sitting there in the water with all their passengers looking over the rails. They yelled over, Whale Shark. Thats when everyone jumped into action. Trying to look over the side of the boat to catch a glimpse while trying to get their snorkel gear on so they could get into the water with it. I grabbed my camera and with my gear on I jumped in. I started taking some video of it and then it turned and started heading down. I went way down as I watched it disappear into the deep blue. I was so excited and disappointed at the same time! I was the only one in the water, no one else saw it the way I did. Back on the boat we waited to see if it would come up again. And it did! We spent the next hour with this gentle giant of the sea. Following it, swimming next to it and it even let us hang on for a ride, for as long as you could hold your breath. It was such an amazing experience its hard to put into words and I am glad I have it all on video…

No more disappointment
